Faith in the Movies, Part 2

April 17: Faith in the Movies

We saw clips from “Places in the Heart” starring Danny Glover, Sally Field, Ed Harris, made in 1984.

The movie clip was a scene in church with congregation taking communion.  The point of this scene is that the congregation includes all of us.    The scene is not to be taken literally; in the plot Mose had already left town but he appears in the congregation.  Also, in 1930s Mose (a black man) would not have been in a white church.

We also saw clips from “A River Runs Through It
From an autobiographical novella by Norman Maclean.
Dir & Prod Robert Redford.
“In our family there was no clear line between religion and fly fishing.”
“Before the rock, there was the voice of God.”

Concluding thought for the class: Remember that God is not outside of culture.  God is inside culture and you will find God if you look.
